Are we entering a new yuga?
Rishi Rathod explores the current world turmoil and its connection with the shifting of yuga cycles
The current times are unprecedented in conscious human memory. We are witnessing massive shifts on a global scale, and the war between two ideologies seems to be scaling up in intensity. People are forced to make choices they never had to in the past, and it is no longer possible to lead a life of pretence.
Wounds are surfacing, as well as the need to address them through spiritual means. The coronavirus has not left a single country and its mutations have baffled even the greatest scientists and biologists who are experimenting with a vaccine to curb its unbridled growth.
Recently, therapist, author and YouTube educator and mentor Suzy Singh’s webinar on Karmic Codes became a massive success in Italy with more than 5000 Italians attending it online and 10,000 viewing it within two days of its broadcast. An astonishing development in a country that does not speak English and which took the help of an interpreter to understand the science of karma, a concept integral to Hindu spirituality! Suzy says that this interest was sparked by the massive loss of lives in Italy after the pandemic spread its deadly tentacles in a developed country, proud of its achievements in the medical field.
Definitely, something is taking a massive turn. Are we entering a new cycle of time?
According to Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism, the movement of time is not linear but circular, and that circle is divided into four parts, collectively called ‘Chaturyuga.’ As per Vedic astrology, these four yugas (ages) comprising Chaturyuga are Sat Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dvapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga. Different schools of thought calculate the yuga cycles differently to understand what happens in every part of the yuga cycle.
The Super Sun
In the Vedic astrology, it is believed that our solar system with the Sun and the planets around it is moving in a galaxy which, in turn, is revolving round a Super Sun, invisible to the naked eye. Sri Yukteshwar Giri mentioned in his book The Holy Science (Kaivalya Darshan) that it takes 24,000 years for our Sun and its planets to complete one cycle around the Super Sun. There are other schools of thought which believe it to be 25,920 years, and some, even more.
Gregg Braden, a five-time New York Times best-selling author, researcher, educator, and internationally renowned pioneer of bridging science and spirituality and human potential believes that there is a cycle to human conflict too. “What the science shows is that human conflict, aggression, and restlessness ebbs and flows according to the rhythms of magnetic fields between the Sun, the earth, and the human heart. When the magnetic field of earth is strong, we are more co-operative and less aggressive, and the opposite when it is weak. We are most vulnerable and susceptible when the magnetic field is at its weakest. If you look at the charts, the ebbs and the flows of the great wars in the past, when they begin and when they end, we get to know that they follow the magnetic field’s highs and lows.”
In spite of different beliefs, all schools believe that yugas impact living beings. Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev says that whenever our solar system comes closer to this big Sun, all the creatures living in the system rise to greater possibilities; we call this ‘Sat Yuga.’ Whenever our system moves away from it, all the creatures fall to the lowest level of possibility; we term this ‘Kali Yuga.’ Sadguru says, “In Sat Yuga, the human mind is at its highest capability. People’s ability to know life, communicate, and live joyfully is at its highest.” However, there is a difference of opinion regarding the direction in which this galactic shift is happening.
According to Sadguru, we are currently going through Dvapara Yuga and we still have 70 years until its completion. In the year 2082, we will complete Dvapara Yuga and move on to Treta Yuga. In this transition period, the world will go through another upheaval, not necessarily in terms of war but probably in terms of population explosion and natural calamities. After that, we will move into this new era of wellbeing and upward movement of human consciousness.
But Maitreya Dadashreeji, the founder of MaitriBodh Parivaar, says that time is undoubtedly shifting towards the Divine Age—Sat Yuga. “The process of the shift began in 2013, so, to be precise, we are between Kali Yuga and Sat Yuga. This is also known as ‘Sangam Yuga’ or the transition period. There are numerous signs of the shift like critical environmental changes, the last pandemic, alarming global unrest, and chaos. But the most prominent three features are the rising voices for total freedom, rejection of division, and an increased penchant for transformation,” he says.
The phase of transition
During the transition, most of us feel unsettled, vulnerable, emotional, and crave even for small things. In other words, it is exasperating and overwhelming for all the beings residing on the planet.
Looking at the shift or transition spiritually, one wonders if there is any battle going on between the forces of darkness and the powers of light. It is believed that forces of darkness increase or amass before they are eliminated. Maybe, in this era of generally increasing light, such as we see today, there is a heightened battle going on between the powers of light and darkness. It is worthwhile to know how the current scenario is being perceived by our spiritual leaders and intellectuals.
Malini Rajendran, an educator, innovator, and a Fulbright scholar with a deep interest in astronomy, says, “The reason for aggression, polarity, and people dividing and taking sides over every opinion expressed and for the rising intolerance everywhere is due to two things.” She adds, “This is merely a transition period and all transitions are painful. The second reason is the excessive consumeristic society that we live in today. The kind of adulterated food we eat robs us of our sanity. The rest of the job is done by the misplaced narrative fed by the news and media cabals.”
There is a point in Malini’s observation regarding the media and news channels. Because of social media, the truth is coming to the fore and people are no longer dependent on organised media to get the news. They, in general, are becoming aware of the lies that were being fed to them for so many years. However, such is the viciousness of today’s times that with every point you make, you’re assigned a lobby, as though nobody is capable of making impartial observations. Unfortunately, the media is thriving on political backing and billionaire funding.
I feel like we have been programmed to think that a war comprises mass destruction and all-round chaos. But, if we think carefully, the time for armed conflicts to win wars may have long gone. Currently, in the information age, we are better suited for a different kind of war which is waged on people’s minds through misleading information, mass brainwashing, and mind-manipulation. It is a silent war, a war on consciousness, where people are enslaved mentally. Our food, water, and air have been poisoned, and we live in a state of constant media-induced worry, fear, and stress.
The social media war
Another important trend we see all over is people taking to social media and TV channels to vent their aggression and anger. It is as if some kind of an ideological war is going on between two opposing forces of society. People are getting influenced, divided over simple opinions, and taking sides. Is there some kind of a sign here which we are not able to see?
Mohanji, a spiritual leader and the founder of Mohanji Foundation and ACT Foundation, says, “Social media, which everybody has access to, represent the general psyche of the society. You can see various levels of ignorance and intolerance on social media. This is a platform society uses to put somebody down, talk bad, gossip about them, tarnish their image, or character-assassinate them. This sells well. Bad news sells well. Adharma [unrighteousness] is like fast food. Modern man can choose it for quick engagement, but not for staying healthy.”
According to him, frequency is an important aspect of transformation or development. “Mostly, a lot of social media posts are mere opinions or signs of ignorance and are probably reducing the frequency of the whole world, because when you are operating from the frequency of comparison, competition, or confusion, rising up and seeing the brightness within is very difficult. It’s blanket after blanket of ignorance over the light that is sitting inside. They have no clue who they are. They are trying to figure out and define themselves through certain symbols, religious dogmas, or philosophies. Thus, their identifications are far from the truth that each one of us is unique and incomparable.”
Cautioning the seeker, he says, “The spiritual person, a seeker, or somebody who’s inclined towards spirituality, must avoid getting trapped in concepts, ideologies, or philosophies that are binding. They should avoid getting ensnared by society, social media, the so-called diversions of life, and stay focussed on finding themselves. Keep enquiring, “Who am I? What am I? What am I doing here?”
I feel, merely staying on the path and indulging in Self-inquiry can help create sanity which, subsequently, will add to world peace.
What lies ahead
So, with the current situation, what lies ahead? Is there a way to predict the coming few decades in connection with the present times? Will there be an upward spiral or a downward spiral in the collective consciousness?
Mohanji reflects: “We don’t know what will happen in the future. There are predictions that there will be man-made disasters as well as natural calamities that can possibly cause much more destruction and human casualties. We may have to fend more diseases, restrictions, lack of facilities, and so on. We might have to live with less Internet connectivity too. It may be impossible to go back to what it was before because worldwide economic and psychological meltdown is taking a toll on people’s lives. There are possibilities of dictatorial rulers manipulating the minds of people, promising them paradise and guiding them into anarchy. When you live in ignorance for a long period, your frequency may not shift for the better easily. After a while, the external frequency starts pushing the person to rise up. Sometimes, the building cannot be refurbished after a certain time and may need to be demolished. This may probably happen on earth. The destruction caused on earth due to our insensitive lifestyle is much larger than we can perceive, especially the imbalance caused by taking fossil fuel from the earth. This is probably a time of rebooting on earth which has been predicted by various teachers, masters, and philosophers.”
Whenever we change internally, our relationships also undergo a change. The shift will also impact the institution of marriage. Mohanji says, “Marriage is now used to alleviate insecurity, which will not work for a long period. After a while, there may be nothing to look forward to. There’s only monotony. The marriage that we see today may cease to exist and may metamorphose into meaningful companionship. When the shift is complete, there could be a redefinition of marriage. It will be about purpose and not age, class, country, culture, colour, social security, and so on. Many people will decide to come together to deliver a larger purpose, selflessly and non-violently. When the purpose is clear, there is a clear reason for marriage. There will be respect. When respect is lost, every relationship becomes stale.”
Due to the transition, we will have to re-configure ourselves and the way we go about the business of life, the way we consume and produce. We will have to teach our new generation to revere Mother Earth and nurture our relationship with her. It’s time to be open and positive, which will help us deal with these chaotic times.
How to deal with the transition
The recent conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn which happened on December 21, 2020, opened up a floodgate of predictions. The US-based popular YouTube channel on astrology which goes with the name Mukhi Mindset, said that this conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn at a zero-degree angle was a rare phenomenon and the beginning of something new. According to it, we are moving from the Age of Pisces (Age of Beliefs) to the Age of Aquarius (Age of Knowledge). It says, “This age of air energy symbolises advance technological development, intellectual social change, and rapid social progression. Overall, new concepts will emerge to reshape our entire political and socio-economic system. This goes on from December 21, 2020, to 2159.”
According to the channel we are witnessing a planetary shift in vibration. “Jupiter is telling Saturn it’s time for growth and expansion—a time to let go of the old. It’s time for love and growth, and we must leave fears behind to move into higher dimensions and higher consciousness. The dark energies will try to pull us back but we have to pull ourselves up. Ultimately, let love guide us, as that’s how we will ascend.”
Mohanji says, “We have to remain flexible to flow with the changing times. We have to lead our children by example, by embodying compassion, kindness, selflessness, and purity in thoughts, words, and actions. We should condemn violence completely. We can guide our children by leading by example and through stories of great masters who have walked this Earth and made a positive difference to people’s lives. They need not even be spiritual. The stories of great legends who lived and made a positive difference in the world can give children the right direction in life.”
Leading by example is the best thing to do at all times. Also, we should reward and recognise people who are doing good work in the world. We should have a movement not just in schools but at every level, where acts of goodness and righteousness are tangibly rewarded. They should be encouraged through official channels, and the doers of these acts should be portrayed as heroes and heroines. Like this, children will get the impetus to act similarly. Competition and comparison must be eliminated from school curriculums. Instead, space should be created for learning creative expression and serving one another.
The steps one can take
Malini Rajendran suggests, “In these times, I propose that people take the heart-route to deal with the situation. The heart works with the electromagnetic field of the earth and the mind works on electricity. When focussed on the heart, we can change the vibration and field positively for humanity to thrive.” She has created the Infinite Life Divine Heart Meditation, which she suggests will help us deal with these changing times and provide an anchor.
Mohanji advises, “We need to use this time well to find ourselves and then spread that light once we find the light within us. Once we have lit the lamp inside, we can then bring that light to the world and create a better world outside through Karma Yoga (selfless service), Bhakti Yoga (devotion), Jnana Yoga (path of knowledge), Raja Yoga (path of liberation), or any similar path. Light the lamps outside with the light inside and then give the light to many people, so that we can have a better society with better leaders who are not crime-, greed-, and exploitation-oriented. Instead, they want to improve society and create a world based on righteousness or dharma. Thus, there’ll be no competition, no comparison, no wars, and no strife. Only acceptance and love. This is possible.”
Dadashreeji says, “You may practise the following three easy ways to maximise the spiritual privilege you have received in the current time:
• You should learn to cultivate good, positive values. The current times demand sensible behaviour from all of us. Let us be wise and not harm Nature.
• Learn to accept yourself ‘as you are’! That’s the quickest way to fix any problem in life. By accepting yourself ‘as you are,’ you open yourself to grace and receive help instantly.
• Associate with your Divine! Your association with the Divine will effectively uplift you from any unwanted condition you might be in. It will efficiently facilitate the process of transformation, which is the need of the hour.”
Who is driving this change?
Each yuga has seen the emergence of a divine being who has spearheaded the leap of human beings into the next dimension. In Dvapara Yuga, it was Sri Krishna, and in Kali Yuga, we wait for the arrival of the legendary Kalki Avataar. If the predictions are true, then is there a divine being around us we are not cognitively aware of? Should we look for Him/Her?
Maitreya Dadashreeji says, “One should ideally focus on one’s own spiritual growth in any given situation—no matter who is God or not. Your spiritual transformation is the essential thing. But at the same time, yes, the Universe will indeed function through one Divine personality to help humanity during this transition period. You may give any name to Him of your choice. If you grow spiritually, you will automatically know and see Him. If you are a true devotee of any God, you will recognise Him through devotion. If you follow the path of knowledge, you will recognise Him through knowledge. You don’t need to seek and follow anyone. Follow your heart, keep growing spiritually, you will witness His presence with ease.
“However, if someone claims to be God, that means they are experiencing the state of Aham-Brahmasmi. In this, you experience oneness with everything. Currently, many masters do experience this state sometimes. This doesn’t mean they are God. Any one of you can also experience this state. Don’t get fooled by calling yourself ‘God’! If someone still claims to be God, I am open to meeting them personally and learning from them the difference between the state of Aham-Brahmasmi and being God. The world gives you the freedom to practise anything and follow anyone. But the best way is to follow your own heart!”
The inevitability of cyclical shifts
Observing the current large-scale changes that seem out of our control, I am reminded of a scriptural story signifying the cyclical nature of time.
When Ram Rajya was established in Treta Yuga and everything was going right, all the demigods felt that it was time for Lord Vishnu (Ram was an avatar of Vishnu) to return to his abode in Vaikunth Loka. They approached Yamaraj, the lord of death. Yamaraj tried many times but could not reach Ram and take away his life because Hanuman (Ram’s greatest devotee) guarded Ram’s life. Ram understood the problem Yamaraj was facing and decided to trick Hanuman. Ram dropped his ring. The ring fell into a crack in the floor. Ram then asked Hanuman to go and fetch the ring. Hanuman, using his spiritual powers, could transform his large body into a tiny one, like a fly. So he jumped into the crack and followed it until he reached Patal Loka (the netherworld).
When he reached Patal Loka, he was greeted by the king of snakes. The king knew the secret of life and death. Upon asking Hanuman what he was looking for, Hanuman replied, “I am looking for Lord Ram’s ring.”
The king said, “Come with me; I will give you the ring.” He took Hanuman to a room full of Ram’s rings and asked him to take any one. Hanuman was surprised and asked him how there could be so many rings?”
The king replied, “Each ring represents one Kaal Chakra (Circle of time). In every chakra, there is a Treta Yuga in which there is a Ram and a Hanuman. Every time Ram will drop his ring and a monkey will come to Patal Loka searching for his ring. By the time the monkey returns to earth, Ram is gone.”
Hanuman then understands the Kaal Chakra and lets go of his beloved God.
