All that is in the universe, even evil, has one purpose, and one purpose alone: the spread of light
Philosphers, sages, teachers, over centuries, have spoken and written of evil. Some have condemned it, others attempted to be compassionate towards those that they have judged ‘wicked’. Few have attempted to explain its function and purpose in the world.
The Universe does not recognise any event as ‘evil’ even though it appears apparent to us as we live our daily life that ‘evil’ is rampant. There is corruption. There is dishonesty. There is violence, and there is bloodshed. None of these can be denied. They exist. And yet, the Universe does not recognise evil. Let us understand this paradox.
In a world of duality, in order to recognise and acknowledge the light, the feature of evil must exist. In a realm of duality, if all appeared as light – which in the Divine Plan, all is – there would be no conscious recognition of light. Those who undertake missions that seem wicked, often do so in order to bring forth an opposing force through which light can be universally recognised.
There is nothing in the Universe whose purpose is not to spread light. All that is in the Universe –yes, even that which we term ‘evil’- has one purpose, and one purpose alone: the spread of light. You may well question ‘how’. Such acts and events help us to re-evaluate our own behaviours, patterns and inner compulsions. Through such re-evaluation we emphasise and reemphasise our choices; choices that endeavour to embrace and serve humanity by asking the question ‘What do I choose, if not this action that causes pain to another? And the answer is, light. And thus, evil spreads light.
When we understand this, it is easy to accept why the Universe does not scorn and disown those who engage in evil, for ultimately they serve the same purpose as light workers, even though the methods employed are as different as black and white. What else does a light worker do but spread light through word,
“There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance” – Socrates | ||
through thought, through speech, through action? What else does evil do but spread light through thought, through word, and through actions that seem so ugly, and seem so dark, that we are forced to look at the darkness of our psyche, and take steps to gain mastery? These acts strike fear in our beings, but with that fear comes the acknowledgement: ‘This is not what I choose to be. This is not what I choose to spread’.
The reason why evil is condemned is because we do not recognise its purpose of spreading the light. Evil is also condemned because it forces us to address the darkness that lies within. Let us turn our attention to that inner darkness that is both the cause and the effect of our emotions. Much has been spoken of hatred, rage and violence, but guilt and shame can be considered two of the darkest emotions that lie within the human heart, though they do not appear to be so.
The guilt factor
Guilt is the most commonly used weapon of manipulation. Children are made to feel guilty for making their parents look ‘bad’, for not finishing their meals, for not following their father’s profession… Guilt. Guilt. Guilt. It is often the simplest way to get our way. Parents are serious offenders, and children use guilt against the same parents who taught them so well! But how often do we stop and question our part in filling another’s heart with the darkest of emotions? This guilt can manifest in different ways. For example, those who cannot say ‘No…’ and thus crush their own needs and desires, because the pain of non-fulfilment is easier to handle than the strangulation of guilt.
Guilt sometimes reveals itself in ways that one may not easily attribute to guilt. When the Universe opens its doors of success, joy and abundance, some are so overwhelmed by unconscious guilt, and the resultant belief ‘I do not deserve this’, that instead of accepting the Divine invitation, they ‘attract’ events that will somehow sabotage fulfilment. How many know that one of their biggest hurdles to manifestation is guilt? A guilt that they may not be consciously aware of, but a guilt that makes them feel undeserving and unworthy.
On our journey of self-awareness, we must come face-to-face with the guilt that we harbour. It is time to forgive ourselves, so that we may be able to understand the divine role played by evil and thus forgive others. By denying the guilt, the guilt will not go away –but the joy of life certainly will.
Spirit cannot hurt. Spirit cannot lie. Spirit cannot harm – but when guilt has formed a harsh, dry crust over the radiance of Spirit, the ego-driven personality resorts to violence, cheating and deception, and on occasions to actions and behaviours that are considered heinous and contemptible. But the Truth remains – however contemptible the action, the word, the deed – at that moment it was the only possible choice for that ego-driven, unconsciously compelled, personality.
Shame
Sometimes darker than guilt is shame. Shame springs from the deepest root of unworthiness. When the guilt has done its task ‘successfully’, the inner being considers itself unworthy; and whereas guilt is a tool of manipulation, shame is the reason for self-destruction. Each time we eat what we know harms us, each time we consume an intoxicant or an addictive stimulant which we know can cause dis-ease, we are often acting from self-destruction caused by shame. There are those who punish themselves repeatedly by ‘seeking’ and ‘remaining’ in abusive relationships, because they do not believe they are worthy of anything better. There are those who are unable to give up addictions because that is the only way they can punish themselves for the shame they harbour within.
Guilt and shame are often camouflaged by self-glorification, and flattery, and seeking validation through actions and words contrived to get followers. Where there is guilt, there is certain shame. Till there is guilt and shame in the human heart, there will be condemnation of the so-called ‘evil.’ And till there is condemnation of evil, evil will exist. Forgiveness is the key. Forgive self. Love self.
