Vinita Sharma explains how stealing a little time aside for yourself can work wonders for you in today’s stressful times.
Life, in today’s fast-paced, modern world is stressful. Long working hours coupled with the intense pressure to deliver, is taking a toll on our physical as well as emotional well-being.
A near-perpetual state of anxiety, nervousness, panic, back pain, and indigestion prevail. Lack of concentration, inability to make decisions, lack of focus and a sense of being overwhelmed by the hassles of daily life are other fall-outs. It is a total burnout situation, which should set your alarm bells ringing. Stress is invariably a happenstance of present life, but it needn’t become a way of life!
Remind yourself that you need a break from the daily grind – rather, you deserve a break – to preserve your physical and mental health. Tell yourself that you work hard and need to gift yourself some ‘Me Time’
Sometimes people think that spending quality time with themselves is selfish and a waste of time. This is far from the truth. It is vitally important to have some quality time alone. Each one of us must give to ourselves the permission to embrace the sacredness of seclusion, where we do our own thing. Psychologists define solitude as the time where you do what you want, without anybody telling you what to do.
“My business is not to remake myself but make the absolute best of what God made.” Robert Browning | ||
It is not easy in the beginning to stop the incessant chatter going on in your mind. You may feel uncomfortable and even guilty about spending one hour on your own– but this break will actually make you emerge as a much happier individual. You need time to be alone, a special private space chosen by you where self-development takes place. It is fascinating to understand the manner in which the musical maestro Mozart composed his magnificent works, “When I am, as it were, completely by myself, entirely alone and of good cheer, say, travelling in a carriage or walking after a good meal or during the night when I cannot sleep, it is on such occasions that my ideas flow best and most abundantly.”
On my own
Solitude is not a lonely pursuit at all. Alone time reduces your stress in many delightful ways. It can prove to be of incredible help in learning to effectively deal with negative emotions such as anger, fear or stress. It has the power to psychologically shape you into the best that you can be. Robert Browning testifies, “My business is not to remake myself but make the absolute best of what God made.” We can all do it with patience, persistence and perseverance. For working people – a suggestion – pencil in half an hour in your appointment book before and after work. It might seem impossible until you start doing it. Soon, your snatched 60 minutes will become inviolate!
Plan your quiet time. Travel back to the time when you were younger, to look for clues. Did you love to play alone when you were 10? What were your favourite activities that you revelled in during school or college? Your ‘Me Time’ will give you a marvellous opportunity to awaken your natural talents. There is a gold mine within you from which you can extract everything you need. Just by spending one hour in your own extraordinary company, you will realise your true connection with yourself. Relax your body, take a deep breath, free your imagination and enjoy your very own little kingdom. Amidst the prevailing paranoia of contemporary times, this inner sanctuary will provide you with the time and space to keep track of the bigger picture of your life. Rediscover yourself, open your mind to explore new ideas and nurture your latent potential.
