Come, rest your tired body, fatigued mind and seeking spirit in nature and allow it to work its wonders
If you have a potted plant at home wilting due to neglect, try TLC i.e. Tender Loving Care. You’ll be surprised at how fast it is restored to health. The secret is the attention, and therefore the energy that you focus on the plant. According to metaphysical principles where attention goes, energy flows. But perhaps more pertinent is the point, as we understand it today, that all matter, animate and inanimate, is constituted of the same fundamental stuff – energy, and energy is nothing but vibrations. Indeed, matter in all forms is a manifestation of a vast field of vibration that is always shifting, transforming and dynamic.
Inanimate objects vibrate at a gross level, at low frequencies, while animate objects have a higher frequency. Man, occupying the highest level of existence, has the highest vibrational energy and someone with a spiritual awareness, living with a higher consciousness will have the highest vibration. In the continuum of consciousness that makes up the universe, the level of vibrational energy is a measure of the extent of spiritual evolution.
Human beings, though, are not the only ones with high vibrational energy. There are places on earth that resonate with high natural energies – primeval forests, thickly wooded areas, sites of ancient civilisations, mountain tops and riversides. In fact any beautiful spot, be it a verdant hill, a garden in full bloom or any scenic panorama, radiates vibrant natural energies.
The corollary to this is that when you commune with nature, you absorb the life-strengthening energies from your surroundings. How do you ‘commune’ with nature? An intimate connection with nature begins, first and foremost, by being truly and consciously aware of its presence. Not a casual view, a cursory glance or an indifferent gaze, but filling your consciousness with its presence, regarding the scene before you with an intimate look where its shapes and sizes, colours and contours, the feel and essence of the place registers on you. Along with the visual feast, you take in the sounds and smells, the very vibrations of the earth to create an inner rapport. When you cultivate your appreciation of the beauty in nature, when you feel the caress of the breeze on your cheeks, the warmth of the sun on your skin, soak in the earthly aromas and resonate with your surrounding, you are truly communing with nature. That kind of bonding allows you not just to recharge your batteries but to rekindle your spirits and facilitate nature to touch your soul. What better way to nourish a soul that is starved. Just the awareness of these principles has the power to raise your vibrations while integrating them in your lives engages the flow of universal energy.
John Muir captures this truth in delightful lines: “Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.”
Experiments conducted in a new field of research called bio-energetics have proved the existence of an intelligent but invincible energy that communicates between all forms of life: plants, animals and humans, operating right down to the cellular level. Even as early as in the seventies, researcher Marcel Vogel, working with plants and their sensitivity to humans found that they have the ability to register human thoughts and emotions and possess memory. He also found that plants radiate energy that is beneficial to man. These findings prove that plants are sentient i.e. able to perceive and communicate with other life forms. Clearly, this should force us to re-evaluate some of our long-held beliefs. In the light of these findings it is not difficult to understand the reverence ancient civilizations had for plants and trees.
How do you sense the energy from a plant or tree? When you behold a beautiful scene in nature, when you hear the whispering leaves, the crackling branches, exult at a tree in full bloom or relax under the shade of a green canopy enjoying the felicity of nature, you are actually sensing the energy radiating from them, you are plugging into nature’s mains. As this awareness grows in your consciousness, you imbibe even more from nature. You might even begin to see an aura, a band of light around a tree that you particularly love. Kirlian photography has been able to record this aura.
When you go for a walk in the forest and truly commune with your surrounding, you’ll notice that it fills you with positive vibes: a sense of well-being, of harmony, gratitude, integrity and joy. Maintaining your contact with earth in this way also helps you drain your negativity, your excess and unnecessary energies into it. You’ll benefit further if you let your intuitive feelings guide you along in your sojourn. Travelling higher on this essentially spiritual path will almost always lead to certain unique results – a sense of cleanliness from within, an inner capacity to reach out to others, a sense of connectedness to life and a feeling of love towards all of creation. Because when you connect with the energies of nature you connect with your inner core, since everything is bound in a vital interconnected relationship at the highest level. And the more you pursue your contact with nature the more it helps you stay connected – to that which synchronises all life. To quote Muir again: “The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness.” He speaks with even more conviction when he says: “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.”
While the medicinal properties of plants and trees have been well known, what is not generally realised is the effect they have on our emotional and spiritual lives. They have the power to transform negative emotions, bring clarity to mind, reduce stress and eliminate toxins on all levels. By bringing in spiritual energies they raise our energy vibration, our vitality, our ‘chi’ as the Chinese call it.
Mankind owes its existence to the great forests and woods. Apart from being a major resource for mankind, they also produce oxygen, support millions of species, control weather systems and enrich soil. Trees live for centuries – our lives seem ephemeral in comparison – solidly rooted to the earth, yet reaching out to the skies, connecting to the sun and air, sheltering and feeding birds and animals, living in complete harmony with the rest of creation. It follows therefore that when we spend quiet moments with them, reaching out and rejoicing at the wonder of life, we are closer to discovering our own roots, our true essence. Nature has provided us an open door to its wealth and wisdom; we only need to walk through it. Henry David Thoreau sums it up succinctly when he says, “I come to my solitary woodland walk as the homesick go home”.
Is there anyway we can ever repay nature for all the bounty it has bestowed upon us? Yes, perhaps by realising the truth of how we have mistreated the earth, then pledging correction and finally laying our heads with humility in its lap and allowing it to ease us off all our negativity.
