One of the fundamental tenets of healing from a dangerous or even ‘incurable’ condition is to cultivate the faith to persist, and the patience to bear the suffering of the condition, says Jamuna Rangachari
Whenever people ask me what was the most important aspect that helped me heal from multiple sclerosis, I respond that along with therapies, it was love and patience. Patience, an often underrated trait, is indeed a key factor in all healing journeys. The etymology of the English word patience, derives from the Latin patientia, a derivative of pati “to suffer”. This was also one of the virtue names coined by the Puritans in the 17th century. To understand complete healing, we need to understand that the word ‘patient’ also has the same root. When suffering an illness a ‘patient’ must cultivate the capacity to bear adversities, develop a calm endurance of pain, and never give up.
When diagnosed with an ailment, we can choose to feel sorry for ourselves, live in a shell, and be jealous of everyone else in the world. The other option, however, is to combat it with patience and perseverance.
The healing cow
Amit Vaidya, a PhD from United States, faced insuperable challenges from 2004. He lost his father unexpectedly in his mid-20s, and two years later, he himself was diagnosed with cancer. While in remission, he became a caregiver to his mother who became afflicted by an even more aggressive form of cancer, till she died in 2011. Then in 2012, he was told that his cancer had resurfaced, and was spreading from the stomach to the lungs, liver and spine, in spite of countless chemo sessions, radiation and two clinical trials. The doctor’s prognosis was that he had about six more months to live. With a heavy heart, he came to India to bid farewell to his extended family.
At that time, grace presented itself though a meeting with his aunt in Mumbai. She showed him an article in a Gujarati magazine about an ayurvedic hospital in Gujarat. As she read on, it became clear that the hospital primarily treated its patients with ‘cow therapy’, a combination of cow dung and cow urine. He immediately went there. Although 11 days was too short a time for him to heal, he made sufficient progress to continue with cow therapy. He went to a village in North Karnataka where he lived with desi cows, to nurse himself back from his sickness. Every day he took panchgavya, a combination of desi cow milk, dahi, ghee, gaumutra (cow urine) and gobar on empty stomach in the morning, drank cow urine and did the gobar baths. He also milked the cows, fed them, massaged and cared for them personally. It was his full circle relationship with them that he considers to be the most important aspect in his recovery. Finally in June 2014, when he took the tests again, he learnt that his cancer had gone.
His book, Holy Cancer – How A Cow Saved My Life is not just a testimony to his therapy but also documents the inner changes his healing journey wrought within him. “My book is about a journey of letting go, finding peace, facing realities and developing the grace to accept love, whoever it comes from,” he says.
His purpose today is to help others find their own healing path through his NGO, Healing Vaidya. He helps his clients decide which alternative therapy to choose, whether it is time to opt for palliative care, or learn basic techniques to lead a healthier and happier lifestyle.
“I’ll be happy if one day we eradicate the word ‘cure’ from our vocabulary. We need to stop searching and just be content to live. Let’s make decisions for ourselves based on the quality of life in each and every given moment. That’s the only thing we have control of our lives,” he says passionately.
He is clear he has not helped anyone heal for, according to him, only the patient can heal himself or herself. When I asked him how he developed so much patience, he states, “At its core, patience is actually healing. Patience isn’t a passive state. It’s an active state because in patience, we learn the value of time and we also understand what it means to live a disciplined life. ”
Magnets, acupressure and prayers
Sarayu Gautam, 12, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia or blood cancer (AML-M7) in December 2004, when she was a mere one year, two months old. Since then, until recently in January this year, she has been going through gruelling rounds of allopathic treatment in the Manipal hospital in Bengaluru. She underwent three different types of transplants. Unfortunately the cancer relapsed every time. In January 2015, the doctors threw up their hands. Her parents desperately looked for other options. Grace presented itself when Pankaj Juyal in their locality informed Sarayu’s mother, Revathi Anantharaman, about Manas Maral, who used magnet therapy and acupressure to help others heal. They started the treatment on February 1st. Before starting the treatment with Manas, Sarayu had severe headache day and night which was treated by allopathy through IV pain killers (at home) thrice a day, and oral pain killers once or twice a day depending on the pain’s severity. Her mornings began at noon and she hardly ate through the day. They started the treatment with small magnets and methi in different positions on her hands and legs (mostly fingers).
Revathi was elated when she saw the results on her daughter on the first day itself, when she was freed of the pain. She continued to see improvement day after day.
Manas also added on a few home remedies like tulsi, and neem. The third day itself, Revathi decided to stop all her allopathic medicines. Manas also recommended holistic healing, meditation, prayers, astrological remedies and house healing. They did that as well. They could see a significant improvement in Sarayu’s health everyday.
At the end of one week she got up early, ate well and went about her daily activities cheerfully, perhaps for the first time in her tormented little life.
When Revathi took her to her allopathy doctor in Manipal Hospital for a routine clinical checkup, he was quite happy with her high energy levels.
Now, Sarayu is attending the new term in school from June 2015. She is so confident that she is even planning to go to a school trip to Dandeli for a week (about 500 km away from Bangalore).
As we can see, the most important factor in Sarayu’s healing journey has been hers and her parents’ faith, patience and determination.
Healing her life
With regular practice of Louise Hay’s work she cured herself of the leak and severe back pain in four months. She continued sincerely. In a year’s time, her insulin resistance, low blood pressure headaches, menstrual pains and many other issues were cleared.
She was also able to have her second child which was considered medically impossible.
Since then, there has been no looking back. She became an accomplished Bowen therapist, Meta Health Practitioner, Heal Your Life Workshop Leader and Life Coach, healing people’s bodies and simultaneously their minds, so that they can achieve all that they wish for in their life whether it is love, relationship, health or wealth.
His faith made him whole
Shreenivas Charan, 28 (name changed) was from an orthodox Brahmin family in South India. Till the 10th standard, he was a good student but when he entered the 11th std, he got distracted and did not study at all. Despite valiant efforts he failed in the 12th standard for three successive years. His parents were upset but even they didn’t know how depressed he was until the day he cried bitterly, with his head on his mother’s lap. Fortunately, his mother told him to do whatever he wanted, and that they would indeed support him.
There were many spiritual lessons that he learnt at that time. He visited a Swamiji who told him to recite the Gayatri mantra minimum 108-1008 times daily and to recite vedic mantras in a proper way with swara and to practice pranayama and asanas. His friend introduced him to a spiritual organisation, where he learnt about bathing in salt water daily to remove his dark energy. He regularly recited the japa of their family deity. He was also helped and guided a lot by Jaya Gopi Dass, an astrologer who counselled him to never give up, and continue combatting his negative feelings.
After this, Srinivas joined up for a diploma in Computer Science. Within a few months, his negative thoughts vanished and he became a top scorer in his district. Today, he is employed as an engineer in the power sector, Karnataka. He considers himself blessed to have had the patience to combat the challenge, and thanks the Almighty for showing him the right direction in life.
