Amrit, Wisdom of Mahavtar Bababji, In the words of Guruji Naushir, Paperback, INR 299; 226 pages
Being immersed in the spiritual circuit 24×7, can jade your reaction to books on gurus and spirituality. But as soon as I started reading this book, I was spellbound. It contained rare gems of knowledge and, above all, a real picture of Mahavtar Babaji’s slender copper-coloured frame, captured from a distance in the inside back cover.
The deathless Mahavtar Babaji is Guruji Naushir’s guru. Guruji Naushir was a successful professional till he met three mystics between 1998 and 2003. In 2000 he started receiving written communication from Mahavtar Babaji, which finally culminated in a personal audience with Babaji in 2010. This book is not an autobiographical account of Naushir’s spiritual journey (though there are enough glimpses of it), but an explanation of several matters related to spirituality. Written in a question-answer format, it clarifies some of the airy fairy notions that have come to dominate spirituality. My practical side simply loved the book for its clarity, command and incisiveness.
After clarifying how to recognise one’s karmic blueprint and then learning to flow with it, Guruji Naushir uses his intellectual sword to cut the ropes of illusion. Taking up the issue of non-judgmentalism, he says that while it is a laudable quality one should not cease having a point of view. “Remain smart even if you are sensitive to the feelings of others. There will be times when something has to be said, and you will have to convey it,” he says. Next, he takes up the innocuous and much-celebrated practice of pranayama. He terms breathing exercises as a spiritual minefield, which can go horribly wrong, creating untold problems for the practitioner, if done without the supervision of an expert teacher. “Breathing routines were designed to activate energy centres,” he says. If a person does them incorrectly or for longer duration than stipulated, they can plunge him into irritability, depression and serious health issues, the book warns. Phew! That’s an eye-opener.
Discussing the current rage for crystals, Guru Naushir warns human beings against fiddling with them. Though crystals have the power to absorb negativity and reflect positive energy, over time they start doing the opposite, plunging the user into doom, despair and disaster. “The only way to avoid this is to bury them deep in the earth after a certain time. A crystal expert is a creature that does not exist on this planet.” he says emphatically. In short, the book takes you on a dazzling ride on the superhighway of cosmic truths. Fasten your seatbelts, and grip hard on the armrests, for the journey is both exhilarating and venturesome.
