A big hearted laugh…a bicycle trip…watching your favourite comedy show…listening to your favourite song…dancing in the rain… you are already smiling, isn’t it? This is what can be called “fun”. It is enjoyment, amusement or light hearted pleasure. Its a mood changer its the battery to recharge your mind, body and spirit. It rejuvenates you, diverts your mind from a serious situation and relaxes it.
But should we really say that fun is superfluous? just an add on? How lightly we take it and easily we write it off as something childish and not required in the world of adults. Whereas, it is us who need it the most. How often we use the phrases, its a serious matter, its not funny. But how I wish it was. Have you ever realised how simple it is to think after a good laugh. It uplifts your mood, your spirit, produces good hormones like endorphins and dopamine and relaxes your heart beat.
The Dilemma
In today’s fast moving, internet savvy and consumer centric world its more of our television sets and websites which are telling us how to have fun and what fun is. Its probably a quickly cooked up dish in a microwave or a bunch of youngsters dancing in a discotheque. We are caught in the web of being what we are naturally and what we see around us.
Why we stop?
After a certain age we often think that our time to have fun is gone. My 65 year old mother in law was conscious of joining a kitty party just because she was the first one of this age group in the family to do so. Today when she comes back from her kitty with a big smile on her face, I ask her ” did you have fun, ” yes “, she says shyly. How much do we women at home want to pickup bicycles like old days and go but how many of us do so?
Present day busy lifestyles keep people so occupied that they have almost forgotten the outdoor fun games and outings. Yes it can be indoors also, but just sticking to internet games and chatting is what fun is reduced to. Festivals are now nothing more than small quick parties rather than bonding and laughing together. A tragedy, an illness or a sudden event can also make a person feel guilty to have fun.
Its a healer and helper
Having fun is really important in living a stress free life and living it fully. Recreational and mild physical activities or simply joining a laughter club. They help you out of a serious situation where you may be feeling stuck. The best ideas click when we are stress free and not forced to think. We become more optimistic and even end up helping others with a contagious laugh. The importance of fun is well observed in yoga through the “hasyaasan” and by laughter therapy in modern day medicine . Choosing to have fun in a grim situation is not a sign of immaturity and escapism rather it is a sign of mental stability. You are preparing yourself to face the situation but with a better mood. Monica Yadav,36 year old housewife from Gurgaon says that, ” after I lost my husband last year, my friends and 2 kids took me out on a holiday. They were cracking jokes or taking me for walks and cycling, I even fulfilled my dream of parasailing. At the end of the trip I realised the importance of my own existence especially for my kids and this that I had to move on.” Such is the power of fun.
As human beings its a natural need to laugh and have fun its just the circumstances and our own inhibitions which stop us. The best memories are always of laughter and fun, the favourite TV shows are mostly comedy ones, we prefer laughing with our friends than sulking, all of us love kids because of the innocent smiles they carry and funny things they do, so why lose the child inside us.
As the famous song says “girls just wanna have fun”…but I’d say, we just wanna have FUN!!!!
