March 2012
Masters, healers, soothsayers and seekers all came together on a single platform to disseminate the message of love, positivity and oneness in the world at the seventh Life Positive Expo concluded in Delhi recently
The event that all LP enthusiasts look forward to the year-round, the annual Life Positive Expo, got off to a flying start as visitors, delegates and loyal readers from all over India and abroad converged at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on 27, 28 and 29 January this year to celebrate the spirit of wholistic living.
People thronged to listen to spiritual speakers like BK Shivani, and Swami Nikhilananda, attend esoteric workshops, and made a beeline to the exhibition stalls to have their signatures analysed, get pranic healing, or to get messages from their guardian angel. Through it all, the life-transforming techniques and insights and the experiential understanding imparted, left the participants in a glow of spiritual enthusiasm. Says trainer and facilitator, Rajagopalan Sreekumar, “I had an amazing blessed time filled with learning, insights, information, meditative experiences, prayers, healing, laughter, soulful music, amazing experiences.” Babbu Gill, a Louise Hay trainer from Chandigarh, says, “I reached home, empowered, inspired, and stand in gratitude to all who participated in making this spiritual expo such a memorable experience.”
Day 1
In her inaugural address, Sister Shivani of the Brahma Kumari fame untied several knots in the complicated lives of her listeners by her insightful discourse on relationships. Commenting on the anguish and pain that relationships often give, Shivani said that the core cause was the poor relationship people had with themselves, and because they did not consider others to be part of their wider self. She said that the primary cause of any conflict in a relationship is the presumption that the other is wrong, but if one were to put oneself in their shoes one would find that they had their reasons. Shivani said that guilt was the biggest problem that afflicted the human soul. When people commit mistakes, they wallow in guilt, and flog themselves with the whip of self-accusatory thoughts. By giving constant attention to the negative and overlooking the positive in them they end up feeding the same weakness they want to overcome and repeat the behaviour at the next opportunity. “Guilt is nothing but anger turned inward,” she said. When a person is angry with himself he blocks the passage of positive thoughts that arise within his heart and creates disharmony in his environment,” she explained.
She urged people to be forgiving of not only other’s faults but also of their own. “Try and recognise signs of poor emotional health such as jealousy, bitterness, frustration, and anger and be as forbearing with them as you would be with somebody suffering from poor physical health,” she said. Her wise words and peaceful appearance powerfully upped the positivity quotient of the Expo.
The workshops for Day 1 included Past-life Regression using Parallel Realities by Dr Yuvraj Kapadia, The Power of Numbers by Seema Middha and Handwriting analysis and Handwriting therapy by Mansee Vashist.
Past-life Regression using Parallel Realities
Dr Yuvraj Kapadia, in his inimitable flamboyant style, waxed eloquent on the scientific basis of the existence of past life, parallel realities and the phenomena of split souls. He said that many problems have their origin in the unresolved issues of a past life that keep knocking on our subconscious and make us react in a particular way to external stimulus even without our volition. Some people have huge phobias, react violently to perceived threats and insults, and suffer from chronic diseases that refuse to heal despite all medication. When such problems acquire enormous proportions and start affecting the life of the person, then regressing to past-life and finding and eliminating the root cause of the problem is the best way out. The workshop was kept alive by the good humour of the facilitator and active participation of the delegates who engaged Dr Yuvraj with pointed questions to further understand the concept. Showing how self-affirmations can help in healing, Dr Yuvraj healed the back pain of one participant. In the latter part of the workshop he facilitated a group regression and the participants reported amazing insights after it was over. One woman was able to unlock the cause of her present alcoholism after she rooted it back to suffering loneliness in past life.
The Power of Numbers by Seema Middha
Seema Middha’s half-day workshop on numerology had the audience clamouring with questions, all of which the good-humoured Seema answered. The heightened level of interest had to do with her subject, numerology, where through the use of what she calls the lo shu grid, our personality, problems and potential stood revealed!
The lo shu grid consists of three columns and three rows
The sum of these three numbers calculated horizontally, vertically or angularly comes to 15. Each of these numbers stands for a planet. Taking our date of birth, we are then asked to insert our numbers into their respective places. If a number recurs more than once, we have to write it as many times as it recurs in its specific square.
We were then asked to calculate our psychic number which is the date of birth. In this case the number would be 7 (1+6) = 7. If the sum is in double digits such as when the birth date is 29 whose sum is 11, the two numbers are once again added to give the final number which in this case is 2 (1+1)
Our kua number is the sum total of our year of birth. For females the number 4 is added to it. In the case of males the number 11 is deducted from it. In this case the sum of 1970 would come to 8. If the number belonged to the female sex the kua number would be 8+4 which is 12 which gives us the kua number of 3.
If the number belonged to the male sex the kua number would be 8- 11 which would be -3, except that minus numbers are not taken into consideration and so the sum once again is 3.
And finally our destiny number is the sum total of our date of birth plus month plus year. In this case the destiny number is 1970 + 16 +11 = 1+9+9+7 = 2+6 = 8
We were then enlightened on the qualities of each number starting from 1 to nine. One, which, incidentally, is Seema’s own psychic number, stands for courage, leadership and dynamism, 2 stands for sensitivity and intuition, 3 for joy, creativity and a philosophical bent of mind, 4 is logical, organised, systematic and orderly, 5 is balanced, friendly, helpful and energetic, 6 is responsible, generous, articulate and given to luxury, 7 is spiritual, creative, tolerant and energetic, 8 is hardworking, trustworthy and religious, 9 is bold, intellectual, determined and enthusiastic.
She also explained the significance of what she calls arrows – i. e, when one’s grid has three numbers running either vertically or horizontally. Without further ado she plunged us into the second half of the workshop which was on graphotherapy, which deals with the tools we can use to improve the weaknesses in our handwriting and therefore improve not just our handwriting but our personality too. Crossing your ‘t’s and dotting your ‘i’s carry enormous weight. The letter t, she said, represented 14 characteristics depending on how we wrote it. If the horizontal line is only to the right, it displays a short temper and if it is to the left, lack of confidence. Not dotting your ‘I’s or doing it in a flyaway manner betrayed a lack of focus.
Through the practice of various symbols which she herself has largely created, she helped us deal with stress management, anger, and to instil positivity, motivation, confidence, and intuition. Handwriting can also help us cultivate harmonious relationships.
Launch of The Laughing Buddha Book
The day one of the Expo also saw the launch of The Laughing Buddha Book compiled and edited by editor Suma Varughese. The book is a compilation of the Laughing Buddha columns that have appeared in Life Positive magazine over the years. Speaking at the book launch, Swami Chaitanya Keerti, editor, Osho Time International, said that the perception of spirituality being a serious business was a fallacy. “Osho always said that seriousness was the cancer of the soul,” said Chaitanya Keerti. “Laughter dissolves seriousness and jokes are poison to the ego. It is liberating and a sure sign of your overflowing personality,” he added. Suma Varughese observed that one’s capacity to laugh is the measure of one’s life force. “When a person goes through depression the first thing to vanish is laughter, ” she said.
Swati Chopra, author and panellist, said that true humour is the ability to laugh at oneself. The Casuarina Hall reverberated with laughter as panelists and audience shared jokes, laughed at the hilarious excerpts from the book and acknowledged the spiritual side of laughter and the lighter side of spirituality.
Day 2
The second day began with Sun Yoga by Uma Shankarji before moving on to The Sound Journey by GL Sampoorna, the Theory and Practice of Tantra, by Professor Madhu Khanna and Cellular Healing by Brandon Bays of New York.
Sun yoga with Yogi Umashankar
Participants braved the biting cold of a Delhi winter morning to show up on the patio of the India Habitat Centre at 7 am to master the unique feat of sun gazing, a source of energy, vitality and joy. Sunyogi Umashankar dispelled the fear of looking directly at the sun by helping participants understand the close relationship between this celestial body and human beings. “Cast face down on the ground in humility, submission, and adoration and make friends with the Sun,” said Sunyogi Umashankar. He taught a unique way of uniting with higher consciousness by meditating before the rising sun. One intrepid 10-year-old was also among the participants. The intriguing yogi revealed that sunyoga helped him survive the extremes of temperature in the Himalayas even without food, water, sleep and warm clothes. He said that the diligent practise of Sunyoga with discipline, determination and humility facilitated his path to self-realisation and self-enquiry. “The rays of the sun fall on all humans without discrimination. It is a perfect example of universal peace, unity and brotherhood,” he rhapsodised.
Theory and Practice of Tantra
Prof Madhu who holds a doctorate from Oxford University on Shakta Tantra demystified the much misunderstood concept of Tantra through her indepth explanation of the ancient philosophy. She said that tantric philosophy has existed parallel to the Vedas and has been preserved in scriptural form under the name of Agamas. She explained that Tantra was wholistic by nature and is based on the premise of power and energy aspect of the truth.
Tantra operates from the primary belief that the human form is essentially a microcosm of a great macrocosm called universe and all the universal truths are located within the subtle and energy body of the gross body.
Tantra considers all human beings as equal because it recognises that the pathway to super consciousness goes via the kundalini shakti seated at the bottom of the spine and present universally in all human beings irrespective of birth or gender. Tantra, unlike other religions that negate the existence of the divine feminine, focuses on the dynamic feminine energy that is responsible for the manifestation of the vibrant cosmos. Later, she expounded the concept of chakras and facilitated chakra healing of the participants.
Cellular healing by Brandon Bays
The workshop on cellular healing by internationally renowned author and healer Brandon Bays was a great bonus for all Life Positive Expo participants. The famous author of the international best-seller, The Journey, exuded a rare vibrancy, as she shared her personal experiences with the audience. She shared how she healed a football-size tumour in her stomach through a technique called cellular healing all by herself.
She now wanted to have as many people gain access to it and self-heal without relying on invasive methods currently popular in the world. Diseases, she explained, arise from painful memories that get stored in the human cells when denied natural release. Cellular healing was a way to gain access to those stored and forgotten memories and flush them out of your system to become healthy again. It was heartening to learn of her deep inner connection with India, and her received guidance from the Infinite Intelligence, urging her to bring her ‘work’ to India. She made delegates experience, accessing cellular memories, through two simple yet powerful exercises, making most participants touch their core beliefs. “This tiny workshop convinced me that unless we have a method of accessing, assimilating and releasing our toxic cell memories, we can’t really heal ourselves,” said Chitra Jha, an enthused participant.
The Sound Journey by GL Sampoorna
The first thing Sampoorna made us do was a long luxurious stretch. Telling us that even if we did not take anything else, we would have got value for our money through it, she exhorted all of us to practice it while waking up in the morning. “The body will wake up naturally and start to smile,” she enticed.
The Sound Journey was full of such simple but wise practices. Ruing the fact that somewhere along the way we stop making the sounds that come naturally to infants and animals she told us that a return to these simple sounds – like a sigh when tired or a groan when in pain – could help pave our way back to health and happiness. She cited the case of a man she was treating for depression. She invited him to spend time in her garden, digging into the soil, while making sounds. After a few weeks of this, he confessed to her with a sense of wonder in his face that he was feeling something he had not felt since he was five years old. Later he was able to identify that feeling. It was joy!
Sound creates vibrations, explained Sampoorna, recalling the Indian understanding that the world has been created through sound or vibrations: Nada Brahma. Sound therefore can help us in many ways. The use of gibberish can free us of anger and sounds like whee or hoo can get rid of inner stuff when we feel overloaded.
The workshop was rich with exercises. She made us practice vowel sounds each of which was connected to one of the seven principal chakras.
The second half of Sampoorna’s presentation was completely experiential, and hence, great fun. She made us connect with our inner child and ‘hum’ to it. Each exercise, whether individual, with a partner or in a group, carried us deep into our ‘love field’ making us feel very loved and pampered. Dancing to our own inner tunes felt wonderful as well.
The workshop ended on a high note of loving energy floating within and around us. We hugged each other and the presenter who had taken us on a ‘sound’ sound journey.
Day 3
Ho’ opono-pono by Maa Gyan Suveera
The two things that Maa Gyan Suveera was uncompromising about was one, that we should start a ho-opono-pono diary. In it she invited us to write the legend, “I, xxxx (name) forgive everyone and everyone forgives me’. “Write this for seven cycles of 70 times each and middle level problems will dissolve,” she promised. In addition she exhorted us to chant either in our minds or under our breath, the famous Ho’opono-pono chant “I love you, I am sorry, please forgive me, thank you.
Secondly she invited us to devote 20 minutes to meditation in order for our lives to unfold peacefully and harmoniously.
The art of forgiveness and making amends is at the heart of Ho-opono-pono, a Hawaiin chant, she explained, adding that ‘ho’, meant to make and ‘opono-pono’ meant to rectify. The word ‘ho-opono-pono’ therefore means to make things all right.
“If we chant this to divinity as many times as possible, many aspects of our life will come right,” she said.
Explaining how this simple technique has such stunning power, she stipulated that the atma is obscured by three bodies, the gross, subtle and the causal. The light of the atma is emitting all the time, but how much of this light is allowed to emanate will depend on these bodies. Ho’opono-pono cleans these structures and let’s the light shine.
Deep Listening and Practising Being Present
Most of us complain of absent-mindedness. The mind wanders far away from the body chasing a thought, incomplete task or unfulfilled dream. Jasmine Bharathan’s Deep listening and Being Present workshop helped participants experience being mindfully present in the moment and letting go of resistance. It also simultaneously focussed on integrating the mind-body-spirit by bringing focus on breathing and paying attention to what we do.
“The easiest thing to do is to bring the mind home to the body and it takes only three seconds to be present. Acknowledge the feelings and learn regulating the mind to catch the nuances of listening. If I am sitting here, accept that it is for me and that is why I am here for. Whatever resonates inside comes outside,” said Jasmine.
In the workshop, Jasmine said that we neeeded to give ourselves permission to feel a range of natural emotions. “We have been brought up in a way that we tend to suppress our emotions. We think that it’s not acceptable to feel angry and we don’t allow that sensation to flow. Anger does not mean that you are bad. Whenever someone feels angry, say to yourself that it’s ok to feel that way.”
As the workshop progressed, Jasmine taught the participants EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique), techniques to bring awareness to the breath of the participants. “Be open to the possibility of change in the internal and external being for any physical pain, discomfort or any other emotion,” she said.
Valedictory address
The Expo was concluded on an enlightening note by the valedictory address of Swami Nikhilananda, head, Chinmaya mission, Delhi branch. Equating the Life Positive Expo with the Kumbha Mela of Prayag, he said that it was where urban minds meet and consciousness raised by honouring the soul encased within the body.
The Swami laid down nine principles through which to attain the life divine. These included vivek or the ability to discriminate, vairagya, the ability to say no to what is undesirable and yes to what is desirable, shama, calmness, dama, control over our senses, uparama, the ability to let of superfluous activities, titiksha, equanimity, shraddha, deep faith, samadhan, the capacity to focus on one’s goal and mmukshatwam, desire for enlightenment.
When asked by a listener to give one path to happiness, Swami Nikhilananda said, “A tranquil mind leads to a happy life. When a person’s mind is disturbed and unbridled thoughts plague his consciousness, then he experiences hellfire without actually passing over. Make friendship with your mind. Let it first think of your happiness before hopping around like a squirrel.”
