If we can align ourselves to life’s timings, and allow our dreams to ripen at their own pace instead of imposing deadlines, we will experience an abundance of God’s grace, says Suma Varughese
To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven,
A time to be born, a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted.
Ecclesisastes 3, 1-2
What a profound truth these beautiful verses express. There is indeed a time for everything, which we, with our plans, deadlines and schedules, find hard to comprehend. It takes wisdom, restraint and acceptance to align ourselves with life’s timings, for we are programmed to crave pleasure and recoil from pain. This means we cannot wait for good things to come our way, just as we cannot wait for bad things to leave us.
Unfortunately, in our desperation for happiness and aversion for sorrow, we deprive ourselves of the blessings and grace that come our way when we willingly submit to God’s timings.
Today, in the era of get-everything-quick almost everyone, including those on the path, disregards the wisdom of biding until the right time. There are scores of self-appointed gurus who have set up shop on the strength of an enlightenment experience, or on even flimsier grounds. Not only do they run the risk of damaging their students, but they also incur extremely severe karmic retribution.
What happens when we align ourselves to life, and allow our dreams or projects to ripen in the fullness of time, or even allow the karma that has come to us to depart at its own appointed time?
When that is the case, I have found that God’s grace flows unlimitedly and several gifts come our way. I have seen this happen repeatedly in my own life, first while tending to my mother during her paralysis, and later, in the healing of my own IBS. In both cases, the journey was excruciating. I struggled with it, but I never ever threw in the towel. In both cases, the rewards were munificent. It was only after my mother’s death that I experienced financial abundance, the joy of a beautiful home, and a quickening of my spiritual progress. The IBS helped me to void my emotions, develop the discipline to heal myself through various techniques, and to control my food-intake.
I am recently experiencing another instance of the joy of abiding by the right time. I have long wanted to hold workshops but was held back because of my extreme diffidence in front of an audience, and also my quick reactivity. Having known the challenging questions some participants could ask, I was anxious that I developed adequate self-control before facing the public. After 20 long years, last October I instinctively felt that I was ready. This February, I held my first writer’s workshop. A kind of magic took over. Before I knew what was what, people were clamouring to attend the workshops. Those who came for them, recommended them to others. The grace of God was palpable in the way the workshop grew, and changed shape into a full-fledged course. Participants offered constructive criticism. With each course I have grown, and the course has grown. What I have experienced is an unbelievable ease and grace. Someone up there has been orchestrating it all for me. Is it because it was the right time? I feel so.
