For a long time, I wanted to lose weight, but my mind kept telling, “We are okay the way we are. What is the need to lose weight?”
Last year, I felt a pain in one knee and was told by the orthopedic to lose some weight. He advised me to visit a proper dietician. My mind rebelled, “These doctors just want to make money by sending you to other doctors and earning their commission.”
I paid no heed to my mind and consulted my intelligence. Intelligence said, “What the doctor says seems to be correct. More weight means more pressure on the knees. It would be good to lose some weight.” I consulted my body. My body was worried, as to what would happen to its health if I went to the dietician.
Ultimately, I decided to listen to my intelligence and I went to the dietician. The dietician altered my diet radically. The new diet was nutritious and filling but sugar, fried foods, and junk food were forbidden, while new foods like salads, soups, more vegetables and soya products were added.
I did not enjoy the food very much. My mind started its chatter again. “Is this life? You can’t even eat the food you enjoy. Life is not meant for sacrificing so much just to lose a few kilos. Forget about it.” For a while, I felt what my mind was saying was true, but my intelligence interfered. “What about your knee.? It pains every time you sit cross-legged. As you age, you will find it difficult to walk. An overweight body means heart problems, and diabetes.” I was confused. But again, I decided to follow my intelligence instead of my mind and continued dieting.
Next week, another problem came up. Due to lack of sugar, I started feeling wobbly in the morning. I had to hold the walls of my house while walking. This was too much for my mind to bear. It screamed, “Forget the dieting. You are feeling dizzy. Anything might happen to you.”
I was a little shaken up and confused. I consulted my husband. He advised me to give up dieting since it was affecting my health. I thought for a day and consulted my dietician, who suggested that I eat more fruits to make up for the lack of sugar.
For two days, I ate two to three fruits in a day and the dizziness was gone. The mind kept quiet. Then, I visited the dietician and lo! I had lost one kg in 15 days. I felt encouraged and happy with the results. Now, my mind’s voice was so dim that I could not hear it at all.
For the next three months, I followed the prescribed diet as suggested by my dietician religiously, and lost six kilos.
I learnt one thing from this experience. The mind has the habit of chattering and desiring comfort. But intelligence is more interested in your overall benefit. If Intelligence guides the mind firmly, then mind will have to follow the instructions of the intelligence. Mind should not be allowed to take charge of our lives but should be made an obedient servant.
