Megha Bajaj junked food wisdom and tapped her body intelligence to get her relationship with food right
The plight of a modern-day seeker is no cake walk. Try trapeze instead. And surprisingly, the issue is not of too little choice, but of too much choice. I tried something funny. I went on to google and typed ‘Why is milk good for you?’ And thousands of articles poured in, each claiming, scientifically, spiritually, just how good milk was for you. With a wicked laugh, I then typed, ‘Why is milk bad for you?’. Lo and behold! A thousand articles poured in, each claiming, scientifically and spiritually, just how harmful milk was for you and why it must be avoided at all costs. Try it yourself. You will find a dichotomy of opinion on every single food item besides water (though there are a few who have started asking you to reduce your water intake as well). What do you do then? How do you walk along this spiritual path, knowing a healthy body is the very vehicle that will make everything possible for you – the material abundance, and the spiritual one, the happiness and the peace? I used to get very confused about food – what to eat, what not to eat, how much to eat, when to eat. The more I read, the more confused I became. Until one day when I looked into the mirror and saw a much heavier, older looking me and realised I just had to get my relationship with food right. Instead of looking outside, as always the seeker finds refuge within. And I was no different.
The first thing I did was to stop reading on food. Instead of driving myself insane about my choices, I first reclaimed my love for food. As we grow up we start associating so much guilt, pain, conflict and other unpleasant emotions with something as basic, essential and nourishing as food. The very first step for me was to stop looking at a particular dish and immediately mentally go into “That’s a lot of carb or fats!” or “That must be easily 500 calories” to the simple, “Gosh that looks yum!” I started seeing, smelling, touching, tasting food once again – and started growing in love with it yet again. I just ate with tremendous love and respect for the nourishment I was receiving. Chewing slowly, running my tongue across my mouth, devouring the taste, the very essence of each food I was eating. Since I wasn’t watching what I was eating, I should have put on more weight, right?Instead, amazingly, I saw a drop in three months This brought me back to my usual lean self. I was eating as much as I needed, and my body seemed to be saying thank you to me. Regarding choice of food, it is absolutely okay to follow your favourite author or dietician. However, the very first person you need to consult is you. Does milk feel good within you? Or not? How about chicken? Alcohol? That particular fruit? Or nut? Let that be the deciding factor of whether you want to keep it as a part of your diet or not. Instead of “healthy” or “unhealthy” food I have started preferring the word “compatible” food. Food has a chemistry with you – it either clicks with you, or it doesn’t. To honour your own body’s intelligence and only then tapping others seems to have worked for me. Food is one of the first, most lasting and intimate relationships we will ever have. We need to go within, and get this right. Since what I eat becomes me, I plan to make every meal count.
