POETIC PEAKS AT RAMGARH
As the summers descend Rashi is transported to the fond memories of time spent in Ramgarh, a picturesque town nestled in the lap of Uttarakhand
Hello there, fellow adventure seekers! Summer's back with a bang, and let me tell you, it's bringing the heat like never before! The solar flares are beaming on earth and the entire planet needs a super chilled zen break!! I wake up on a hot sunny day and try all possibilities… walk under tall trees in the Pitchandikulam forest, bury my feet in the wet earth in my own garden, let waves splash on me its lukewarm salty waters on the Auroville beach nearby, but no, this isn’t working at all!! The MOUNTAINS beckon me! To the snow clad beautiful Himalayas, lush green valley and flower-fruit bowl up there in the north, I must go!!
I remember the pandemic period of lockdown and how I had the same beckoning and had to almost flee to one of the most beautiful place in India. Ah, the memories flood back like a refreshing mountain stream!
Picture this: It's 3 AM, and I'm gearing up for an epic trek in Ramgarh. Layers of woollen clothes, hiking shoes laced up, backpack filled with goodies, and I'm ready to conquer the majestic peaks of Shakti and Shiva!
It is only when you have half climbed the half mountain that you reach a fork where you have to decide which way to go- the Shiva mountain tests your limits with its steep trails and rocky terrain, while Shakti mountain embraces you like a loving mother, guiding you to its summit where a tiny temple awaits you, echoing with the prayers of pilgrims past.
And oh, that sunrise atop the Shakti mountain is a sight straight out of a dream! As the first rays of dawn kiss the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, it's like witnessing pure magic unfold before your eyes. Words can't quite capture the awe and wonder of that moment, but a poem of Sri Aurobindo echoes in my heart…
The little views grew great, the great grew small.
As yet some largeness was of inmost things
And he remembered in the formless sense
Proud kingdoms of intense and beautiful life
And love left free to do his absolute will
And dreams at once commuted into power.
Today, I am super excited to take you on a virtual journey to the breathtaking town of Ramgarh nestled in the lap of the majestic Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. If you're a nature lover like me, you're in for a treat! As you drive up the winding roads, you'll be mesmerised by the serene beauty of Ramgarh. The air is crisp, the scenery, picturesque, and everywhere you look, there's a sense of tranquillity that's unparalleled.
Ramgarh is also known as the 'Fruit Bowl of Kumaon', as it is dotted with orchards brimming with juicy apples, plump peaches, and succulent apricots. Trust me, there's nothing quite like plucking a fresh fruit straight from the tree and savouring its sweetness in nature's embrace.
And speaking of embracing nature, wait till you witness the magical sunsets in Ramgarh. If Ramgarh had to have a movie title, I think it will be “Sunrise Serenades and Sunset Soirees”. As the sun dips behind the snow-capped peaks, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, you'll find yourself completely spellbound by the sheer beauty of it all. It's moments like these that remind us of the wonders of Mother Nature, like Robin Baker said, “I have an immense amount of respect for the natural medicine that Mother Earth provides.”
Let's not forget about the warm and welcoming locals of Ramgarh, who add an extra layer of charm to this already enchanting town. Whether you're striking up a conversation with a fruit vendor at the market or sharing stories with a shepherd tending to his flock, you'll be greeted with genuine smiles and open hearts wherever you go. While I stayed in the gorgeous Ramgarh Bungalow, a Neemrana property of historical relevance and enjoyed their food too, I realised that the impact of the colonization was evident from the fact that there were so many different bakeries and amazing café with authentic taste, catering to wide diaspora of tourists.
What you would relish would be the fresh and natural taste of food. Freshly plucked greens, vegetables and herbs, cooked right there for you in extraordinary flavour-fullness, capture not just the local taste but the vibe of the Kumaon region itself. What I loved most were Kumaoni authentic delicacies like bhatt ki churkani (a curry-like preparation made from a black pulse found only in the Himalayan region), aloo ke gutke (a dry spiced potato curry made with locally grown reddish brown potatoes), and lauki raita (made by mixing sautéed bottle gourd with curd and lots of mustard ...). The local family brought me amazing new things like Chainsoo, Bhatt ka jaula, Dabke, kapa made in their home every day as a picnic basket for the daily hikes.
Living in a Neemrana Bungalow in Ramgarh is like stepping into a living poem, where history dances with modern comforts in perfect harmony. These bungalows are not just homes – they're time capsules, preserving the elegance and allure of a bygone era. Picture yourself surrounded by colonial architecture and vintage furnishings, with each corner whispering tales of a glorious past. And when you are done contemplating, eating and enjoying your creative impulses, you can hike to the Tagore hill!
Nestled amidst the picturesque hills of Ramgarh, Tagore Top, affectionately known as Tagore Topi, is more than just a scenic spot – it's a poetic affair steeped in literary history. Imagine walking in the footsteps of the legendary Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore himself, who once graced this hilltop with his presence during his visit to the Kumaon region. It was here, amidst the tranquil beauty of nature, that Tagore found solace and inspiration to pen down verses that echoed the very essence of Mother Earth's majesty.
While Tagore's legacy may have left its mark on these hills, we can't forget about the incredible contributions of another literary giant – Mahadevi Verma! This revered poet, who called Ramgarh home for a significant part of her life, has left an indelible imprint on the literary landscape of India. Step inside Meera Kuteer, and you'll find yourself surrounded by the very essence of Mahadevi Verma's genius. From her timeless verses to personal belongings and cherished memorabilia, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of a true literary icon.
And now that your cup is brimming with Natures’ delight and the poetry of great authors, may be it is time for a quiet time and deeper connection with your soul!!
Madhuban and Monks Retreat in Talla Ramgarh stand as the epitome of serene meditation centers nestled amidst nature's embrace. These retreats offer a sacred sanctuary where seekers can immerse themselves in the practice of Sri Aurobindo and Mother's Integral Yoga. As you step into these tranquil spaces, surrounded by lush greenery and the melodious symphony of birdsong, you'll feel a sense of peace wash over you like a gentle breeze. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or new to the path of self-discovery, Madhuban and Monks Retreat provide the ideal setting to delve deep into meditation, introspection, and spiritual growth. It's a journey of the soul, guided by the wisdom of ancient traditions and the transformative power of nature's bounty.
Ramgarh is like a big warm hug from Mother Nature. Imagine rolling hills adorned with apple orchards, pine forests, and waterfalls straight out of a fairytale – that's what you'll find around every corner here. It's like stepping into a postcard picture, only better because you're living it.
