May 2015 By Life Positive Good news for vegans and those who do not exclude food from the penumbra of ethics. Instead of going backfoot each time the nutritionist tells you that a vegan diet is low on proteins, Vitamin D3 or Omega 3DHA, you can now show them bottles of vegan supplements of these essential nutrients. Unived, the company behind such an empowering concept, produces 32 such products across three verticles, dietary supplements, organic skincare, and sports nutrition. Unived claims to be the first to be certified Vegan in India, by the Vegan society, UK. It claims that all their products are also natural, organic and 100 per cent cruelty free. Talking about his company, Amit Mehta, 32, says, “I used to be an athlete and was into recreational sports. I was a vegetarian since I was born in a vegetarian family. During my teens I began consuming non-vegetarian food to increase my protein intake and build up on my muscles. But when I went to Australia for higher studies I got exposed to plant-based nutrition and the more I read and researched the more I felt that we don’t need to eat meat and plants can supply all dietary inputs.” He adds, “When I changed my diet, I could immediately see the benefits of plant-based food. I had more energy during the day and my recovery from fatigue after I did workouts or ran was much higher than my meat-eating friends. I thought about creating products which could offer vegan substitutes to nutrients a vegan diet was considered lacking in, and started Unived Healthcare in 2010 in Mumbai.” Talking about Vegan Omega 3 DHA supplements, Amit says, “It is a myth that sea food especially fish produce Omega 3. The micro algae which the fish feed on is the source of Omega 3. So instead of taking it from fish, at Unived we create a dietary supplement derived straight from the micro algae. Our capsules and tablets come with a cellulose coating unlike other companies which use gelatin.” Interestingly, Unived is PETA India certified for creating Dear Earth, a skin care range of animal cruelty free products. Unived is also perhaps the first company to launch a purely plant-based,sports nutrition drink for performance and endurance athletes called RRUNN. Says Rajesh Chandolia, a runner from Bengaluru, “Considering the hectic lifestyle most of us amateurs runners lead, it is practically impossible to follow a diet that would help the body shape up. But after I used the RRUNN products I noticed considerable difference in my endurance level during runs.” Amit also plans to bring about a completely vegan protein which will substitute for all the milk-based protein products.
