Time out with Ananda
How all can Win
Ananda was watching Rahul playing ball with his little brother, Rohan. The little boy said, ‘Let’s see who can throw the ball higher.’ Even though Rohan tossed the ball with all his might, his brother, just by casually tossing it, sent the ball higher. This happened many times so that Rohan, who earnestly wanted to win, became crestfallen. Upon realizing this, Rahul began mock playing, patting the ball instead of tossing it up, but Rohan saw that Rahul was acting and lost interest.
Rahul suggested other games, maybe play the swing, run around the park or play chase and catch. But no, Rohan just wanted to throw up the ball. Then Ananda went closer and whispered something in Rahul’s ear.
Suddenly smiling, Rahul changed the rules of the game: The aim now was to jointly try to toss the ball up to the highest branch of a nearby tree. Both boys clasped their hands and threw up the ball with their combined might. Thoroughly enjoying the game, they not only succeeded in their goal but even had a marvelous time together.
Later, appreciating Rahul for his wonderful attitude, Ananda explained to the children, ‘In every situation in life, it is possible to arrive at a solution where everybody can be happy, if we attempt to do so. This is what adults call a win-win solution.’
Did you know?
Beavers artfully pile branches and sticks to make their lodge, often six feet across. A mud ‘plaster’ filling in the spaces, freezes in the winter, and a solid wall soon blocks the river. At the top of the lodge, a loose pile of branches rises several feet out of the water to allow air to enter the living area. Nearby, branches are anchored in the pond mud. To get food in winter, beavers follow underwater tunnels leading from the dam into the living chamber and out the back to the food storage area.
Master architects of the animal kingdom, their work enhances rather than destroys the environment, by creating new wetland areas where fish swim back upstream to prosper. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were to contribute to our environment like the beaver does?

The Significance of Giving
12-year-old Sriram Katipamula, tells the story of how he learnt an important lesson in giving.
Giving can be hard at first. But when you give something to someone, you feel good inside. Here is a true story of how I experienced ‘giving.’
When I was seven, living in Houston, Texas, our cousins came over from Boston and Chicago and we went to Battleship Texas, La Porte. Inside, we looked at all the rooms. They were fascinating! While leaving, I walked to the staircase where I saw a hundred dollar bill. I was stunned and so was everybody else.
Dad said, ‘Let’s go to the ‘Lost and Found’.’ I screamed, ‘Are you kidding?’ Mom said, ‘We have to go to the ‘Lost and Found’!’ I gave up and stomped angrily to ‘Lost and Found’ to return the money. They said if the owner did not come within a week they would give it to the needy.
Even though I did not want to give up the hundred dollar bill, when I gave it, I felt good. If you give something to someone, you feel good and they feel good.
Children, do send us stories of the lessons you have learnt or other interesting anecdotes. This section is marked for you.

Love Lessons
Amma looks worried today and I know the reason why.
She has to be out of town awhile and has to say goodbye.
She worries how I will manage, whether I’ll be all right.
Of course I will! Love protects even when one is out of sight.
I learnt to let go in love, when I was a child of three.
Amma did not keep me home because she wanted to be with me.
I was sent to school so that my future I would find.
The first Love Lesson I learnt was: ‘Love lets go. It does not bind.’
As I grew up and my hobbies kept me away from home,
As I made friends and often left people at home alone.
Amma rejoiced that my horizons grew every single day.
Love Lesson Two: ‘Love lets go. With selfishness kept at bay.’
Sometime ago I was faced with a situation very tough.
Papa had to work abroad… the separation would be rough.
Opportunities for him were plenty. I learnt to smile for his sake.
Love Lesson Three: ‘Love lets go. It gives more than it takes.’
One day there was left over, a single slice of cake.
My sister, three years older, ‘developed’ a stomach ache.
Amma smiled, my sister had learnt Love Lesson Number Four:
‘Love lets go. In giving and sharing does happiness soar.’
Every TV serial depicts relationships gone sour.
Arguments and problems increase everywhere each hour.
Amma has told me the secret: Why we at home don’t fight.
Love Lesson Five: ‘Love lets go. Of wanting to be always right.’
Ajju was very ill and it was time for him to go.
He would leave us forever. My heart was aching so.
In death he’d find his comfort. The loss was ours to bear.
Love Lesson Six: ‘Love lets go. Rather us than those we care.’
Often as I grew up, lessons in Love were taught.
And as I practiced what I learnt, what wealth to me was brought.
I just let go in Love and more Love came my way.
This Love I know is strong and true and with me forever to stay.
