“The first thing that I can tell you about Guru ji is that he is NOT a music teacher,” said Aneel Agarwal, at the workshop of Sardar Brij Inder Singh Monga that I attended recently at his residence in Delhi with my husband. “He is the only holistic practitioner of music I have ever met and had the privilege of learning from,” Aneel averred. This was indeed the views of all the people who had the opportunity of learning from him.
The person who introduced Mr Agarwal to the Guru is Ajay Poddar, his friend from Delhi who says “ YSS is a simple but revolutionary way of teaching and learning singing as well as of improving health . As far as I am concerned, it has improved my singing and is also used by me as therapy for certain health conditions like Sinus, Digestion and so on.
Sardar Inder Singh Monga is now based in Ludhiana and is a renowned Professor of Indian Classical Music (Vocal) . He has spent almost 4 decades learning and teaching Hindustani Classical Music at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, New Delhi. His deep interest and knowledge of Yoga (Pranayam) led him to study Naturopathy. He then interlinked all these systems to develop the unique system of Yogic Swar Sadhana. This he has been sharing with many of his students as well as participants of his workshops since 2008.
Yogic Swar Sadhana is a technique based on yogic practice which combines the breath, the swars (musical notes), the chakras and the nadi. While practicing swaras, one is effectively stimulating the relative Chakras. Each swar has a particular frequency and vibration and so does each Chakra. Hence, when the frequency of the swar and Chakra are matched together, they resonate with each other. In this way Chakras are strengthened and reactivated with the help of the swar’s frequency. The reactivation of the Chakra energizes that area of the body and brain in which the Chakra has its field. Reactivating all the seven Chakras located at different parts of the body reactivates the entire body of an individual.
The unique part of the workshop was focusing on particular parts of the body while singing the associated swar.
By such singing, we could see the Nadi functioning well and the blocks in the body removed, hence allowing energy to pass through the entire body. This stimulates the brain cells too. This healing practice helped us in purifying the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual spaces.
The ability to sing is not a requirement for taking part as Guru ji firmly believes everybody can benefit from the practice of music.
This healing practice helps everyone in purifying the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.
Guru ji taught us the swars (musical notes) while concentrating on the Mandra, Madhya and Taar saptaka (octaves); on the the seven main Chakras the Nadis and Vayus.
We could see everyone improving in that very day with more and more vigour, energy and clarity.
Lavanya Agarwal, said she wanted to learn music as a personal space for herself. She began singing with a little hesitancy and sang beautifully at the end of the workshop.
Mrs Ranjana Agarwal said she had started singing fairly recently as she always felt she did not have the talent. It was this technique that made her open up. She had also started seeing the difference in her health once she knew the chakras associated with each swara. “This is a unique technique that has given me confidence in singing while the improvement in my health has give me the inspiration to continue practicing it regularly” she declared and was one of the most active participants in the workshop.
As far as I am concerned, I have always wished to explore the link between chakras and music. Even my grandfather, a Carnatic musician, used to talk about this connection. Till now, however, such a clear teaching I had not come across and hence was elated at the end of the workshop. Is it not said that a Guru appears when the student is ready? This workshop certainly seemed to the answer to my prayers.
