Act to save the environment
We need to save the only planet we have for ourselves and for the next generations. This is definitely possible if we work on it together without blaming anyone but taking concrete steps,
As per the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report , things are much worse now for the earth than earlier. Natural patterns are changing and are having an impact on food production. Climate changes are happening and sea levels are rising. This could cause catastrophic flooding across the globe. In hills, fragile ecosystems are collapsing.
There are many things that are just not in our control but there also are things that we can work on. These could seem minor but every little step does make a difference and together, there could be a concrete difference. We could do the following
1. Save water
Earlier, even before climate change threatened, all of us were told to preserve and save water as a basic guideline to respect the earth. Excess water was never thrown away and if there was too much water, nearby plants were watered. We need to return to that way of living now..
2. Reduce use of cars
When there is public transport, using this makes a huge difference to the environment. For those who wish to use only cars, car pooling could be explored. This is easier that we think
3. Combine exercise and commuting
We could have a fitness routine like biking and walking and combine it with going to work. This again is easier than we think when we have the intent.
4. Reuse all that we can
When we used to go shopping, earlier we always carried a cloth bag to bring back all that we bought. This again is no longer happening. We need to return to this habit to preserve the environment, reduce the use of plastic and reduce pollution.
5. Compost all the waste generated
Going back to earlier times, all the greens used to be thrown in the garden to create natural compost. This again is not taking place now. We surely can do this again to regenerate planet earth naturally.
Here, I remember a young girl in my previous colony who used to ask all of us to separate the waste into greens that could be recycled and trash that could not be recycled. She did this diligently every week and we followed her instructions faithfully.
6. Plant trees
Bangalore where I live used to be called the land of gardens. Now it is a concrete jungle with all kinds of natural challenges taking place. We all know the earth is dying because of lack of greenery as greenery is the one wellness pill that the earth needs.
Another little girl in my circle asked everyone to plant a tree as a birthday gift for her and requested people to do this as frequently as possible. All of us swore to do this as we were inspired by her.
All the above steps are simple to do and we must do it to preserve the earth for the next generation. In this context, children have given me more hope for the future than any events and talks I have attended. For, they are clear about their duty to the planet that we reside in.
