5 Tips To Design An Outdoor Space Focused On Health And Wellness

Having an area where people can relax and unwind will be like a breath of fresh air as most homes in the big cities are in the middle of a concrete jungle. Thus, in designing an area, always keep in mind the safety of everyone who wishes to go there. And consider how the whole place can affect their overall health and wellness, as this is often overlooked. Take inspiration from parks, cabins, spas, and the woods. Incorporate all their good elements and combine them to create your outdoor space. Here are a few tips for designing an outdoor space.   

1. Have Reading Area  

It's an excellent way to get people off their phones or electronic devices and encourage them to read more books. In this digital age, some apps will allow you to download eBooks. However, nothing can compare to the experience of having to feel each page of the book as you see what happens next.  

Ensure this area has proper lighting and adjust it to the appropriate brightness level suitable for reading. You can put shelves and outdoor bar furniture to mimic that mini-library experience. Get a few books from different authors and genres so that anyone from any age group will have something to read. 

2. Make Room For Fitness 

Exercising can cause the brain to release endorphins, the body's natural happy hormones. Thus, when people are happy, they are motivated to do more and improve their well-being. Think about parks, where both adults and children come to play and exercise. You can put a playground in the middle so parents can see their kids as they exercise. You can add bicycle lanes, wooden benches, and a sandbox for the kids. In addition, don't forget to child-proof the playground to minimize accidents.

There are different types of exercises which include:

  • Aerobic Exercise – This type of exercise focuses on the endurance of your heart and lungs. Some aerobic exercises include biking, jogging, dancing, and swimming.

  • Stretching – This type of exercise enhances your body’s flexibility. You can do simple, repetitive tasks such as reaching for your toes, doing arm circles, or raising your arms overhead.

  • Balance Exercise – This type of exercise builds a mind-body connection. Some balance exercises that you can do are walking sideways, standing with one leg, or standing with feet together with knees slightly bent.

  • Strength Exercise – This exercise develops your muscles and enhances bone growth. You may opt for bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, and lunges. Over time you may add weight and resistance from dumbbells or resistance bands.

 3. Provide An Area Where People Can Sit And Have A Picnic 

If possible, most of the space should have grass or faux grass. It would be nice to see families and friends share a meal while enjoying each other's company. They can bring their picnic blanket and basket. Scatter wooden tables and chairs and place them near big trees for a natural shade from the sun. You can also add a handwashing station, water fountains, and a grill for those who want to have barbecues. Don't forget to put waste segregation bins. This will remind everyone to clean up after and throw their trash in the right bin. 

4. Create A Space For Meditation And Yoga 

Meditation is one way to destress and get rid of negative energy. Therefore, create a space where people can meditate and do yoga. It's a good idea to put the space near a body of water like a lake or river, but a fish pond will do just fine too. Water is a good touch and suits the aesthetics of the place. It's soothing to hear the sound of water as you meditate.  

Build a wooden gazebo and put a rug in the middle. Fill it with cushions and pillows so that anyone who wishes to meditate can be comfortable. Throw in a few yoga mats, and include potted and hanging plants. 

5. Grow Plants Or Build A GreenHouse 

Plants are good for everyone. They can improve anyone's mood, promote creativity, reduce stress, and clean the air. It may be therapeutic to some; just at the sight of it calms them down unless they're allergic to it. Plants add life to the concrete structures around them. It can be a good idea to have a planting activity as it benefits humans and the environment. Therefore, leave some space for planting. The eco-warriors will surely approve of this place. Some plants that you can consider growing are:

  • Lavender – This is a common favorite because of its many benefits, including relieving anxiety and depression and helping improve sleep. You can put them near the wooden benches.

  • Foxtail Fern – This plant is known for its medicinal value. It can be used to treat cough and constipation. Moreover, it’s best to place it on hanging pots. 

  • Bamboo – This plant releases about 35% more oxygen than most plants. Aside from its zen-like effect, it can also stimulate your appetite and lower cholesterol.

 Conclusion: 

There are key elements that can create that wonderful outdoor experience. With the abovementioned tips, you can consider how your outdoor space can impact everyone's health and wellness without compromising their safety.
