Tips from an expert on how to reduce anxiety levels

Growing levels of anxiety have been reaching epidemic proportions over the last decade, affecting millions of people around the world. Research has shown that our level of anxiety in society has been steadily rising over time, so it’s no surprise that there are now more people suffering from some form of anxiety than ever before. Avoid Caffeine

Caffeine can make us feel more anxious, not less. Avoiding caffeine is one way we can keep our anxiety levels down. Try drinking green tea instead. It has calming properties that help reduce stress and boost energy at the same time. Other drinks like peppermint or chamomile are also good options for reducing your anxiety level. Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is one of the easiest and most effective ways to combat stress and anxiety. If you're feeling stressed, try going to bed earlier and waking up a little bit later than usual. You'll feel more energized throughout the day, which will help reduce your stress levels. Sleep has also been shown to regulate serotonin levels in the brain, so you may find that your mood improves as well.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise is one of the best ways you can combat stress and anxiety. Find an activity that you enjoy (walking, running, cycling) and go for a short jog every morning before work. This will help your body release endorphins, which are natural chemicals that make us feel good. If you're not a morning person, try going for a walk after dinner or during your lunch hour. You might find that it's easier than trying to get up at 5 am! 

Practice Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques that work best for me are deep breathing, mindful meditation, and listening to calming music. Each person has a unique way of reducing their level of anxiety. Find what works best for you and practice it often. If nothing seems to work, talk with your doctor about other options such as medications or therapy. However, please do not stop taking any prescribed medication without consulting your doctor first.

Seek Professional Help

Seek professional help. Anxiety disorders are very common, but they can also be treated. If you are experiencing a high degree of anxiety and think that it is impacting your everyday life, then speak with your doctor or consult with a mental health professional. There are many medications and therapies available for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Some people might not like taking medication, so therapy is often a good option. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) focuses on changing thoughts, feelings and behaviors in order to alleviate symptoms.
